Check Why a Zotero Photo Attachment Is Missing on Another Computer

By ImgHeal · Updated

A Zotero record can synchronize while its linked photo file remains available only on the original computer. Check the attachment type and actual path before importing duplicates. Metadata visibility and full-image access are separate parts of a research handoff.

Establish what reached the second computer

Open the expected parent record and compare its title, source ID, and notes with the first computer. Then try opening the image attachment. Record whether the failure concerns the record itself or only the file. A matching attachment title is not proof that image bytes arrived. Do not delete the reference or create another one merely to make an attachment appear; that can fragment citations and notes while leaving the original file-location problem unresolved.

Inspect stored and linked attachment behavior

Zotero documents stored files and linked files separately. Its synchronization documentation also separates library data from attachments. Determine which model your photo uses and inspect its source path through supported controls. For a linked file, establish whether the intended folder exists on the second machine and whether your documented external transfer arrangement applies. Do not put the active Zotero database into an improvised cloud-sync folder as a shortcut. Follow the application's supported data-location and synchronization guidance.

Verify full-image access independently

Once the intended file arrangement is restored, open a complete image at useful detail on the second computer. Check a captioned back view as well as an ordinary portrait. Confirm that both computers resolve to the intended source or managed copy, and record any remaining offline dependencies. Keep a separate backup of the original scan regardless of synchronization. If a restored viewing attachment is included, label it clearly and verify its own availability; access to a source record does not imply that every derivative traveled with it.

Check this workflow

  • Distinguish missing data from missing files.
  • Identify the attachment storage model.
  • Open full images on the receiving computer.

Questions about this restoration task

Does successful Zotero sync prove linked photographs were uploaded?

No. Zotero's linked-file workflow has different file-transfer behavior from its library-data synchronization. Test the actual attachments.
