Identify a IIIF Manifest Version Before Interpreting Its Photo Views
By ImgHeal · Updated
IIIF Presentation 2 and 3 manifests organize information differently. Identify the declared version before interpreting fields or blaming a missing view on a damaged archive file. Use tools supporting that version and compare the result with the institution's own presentation.

Preserve the manifest you received
Keep the original manifest reference and, when appropriate, an unchanged local research copy. Record the institution's object ID and access date. Inspect its declared context and other version indicators through an appropriate text or JSON viewer. Do not edit property names simply to make the document resemble a tutorial using another version. A saved manifest may still depend on remote image services, so treat local availability of the JSON separately from access to its associated photographs.
Use version-specific documentation
The IIIF consortium publishes separate Presentation API specifications for versions 2.1 and 3. Review the structure that matches the source before tracing view order, labels, or linked resources. Confirm whether the viewer or importing application supports that version. If a compatible institutional viewer shows all views while another tool does not, report the compatibility difference with a small example. Avoid repeatedly recreating metadata records or downloading unrelated images to compensate for a parser that expects a different structure.
Check semantic agreement rather than identical syntax
Compare the object's identity, view labels, sequence, rights context, and image-service relationships in the supported display. When a migration or conversion is required, test one multi-view object and retain the original alongside the converted representation. Record any fields not carried through. A successful JSON parse is not enough if the back inscription moved, a label disappeared, or a source link changed meaning. Keep restored viewing derivatives tied to the accepted source view so a compatibility repair does not silently alter which historical image underlies the restoration.
Check this workflow
- Retain the original versioned source.
- Use compatible documentation and tools.
- Compare identity and view relationships after conversion.

Questions about this restoration task
Does valid JSON prove a viewer can interpret every IIIF manifest?
No. JSON syntax validity and support for a particular IIIF version are different checks.
