How to Hand a Digital Photo Archive to Another Family Member
By ImgHeal · Updated
Package sources, viewing copies, and instructions so the collection remains usable without you.
Prepare a readable inventory
Include stable identifiers, known names, approximate dates, and source relationships in an index. Explain the folder structure in a short readme. Distinguish untouched scans from restored and colorized derivatives so the recipient can choose the appropriate version.
Check file usability
Include standard viewing exports even when specialized editing projects are retained. Ask the recipient to open a few masters, captions, and examples from different folders. Identify any required software without making that application the only way to understand the archive.
Agree on stewardship
Explain backup locations, privacy preferences, and unresolved identifications. Transfer recovery instructions through an appropriate private channel when needed, rather than placing credentials inside the public archive. Keep a verified independent copy until the handoff has been checked.
Check before you finish
- Include a readme and portable index.
- Test files with the receiving family member.
