Check What a Tropy JSON-LD Export Includes Before Sharing
By ImgHeal · Updated
A Tropy JSON-LD export can transfer research descriptions and notes without supplying an independent copy of every associated photograph. Plan the image handoff separately. A file that opens as readable data is not automatically a complete archive another researcher can use offline.

Agree on the recipient's task
Ask whether the recipient needs to read descriptions, import structured research data, or examine the full photographs. These are different deliverables. Select a representative item with two views, a note, an uncertain date, and a source reference. Keep a list of the associated image filenames. Use made-up or authorized information for the exchange test if the real collection contains private family notes. Do not send every record simply because the export command allows a large selection.
Inspect the exported research data
Tropy's export documentation describes JSON-LD metadata and notes separately from photo files. Export the sample and inspect its title, identifier, text, and links using a suitable viewer. Check that characters and note formatting remain readable. Do not infer from a reference to an image that its bytes are embedded in the export. Retain the export file and a short manifest of the photos that the recipient also requires. Verify the installed application's current export choices rather than assuming every plugin follows the same packaging behavior.
| Handoff component | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Research-data export | Descriptions and notes retain their meaning |
| Photo files | Full source images are available independently |
| Mapping note | The recipient can connect records to the correct views |
Test an independent receipt
Have the recipient open or import the sample through their intended workflow and locate the actual photographs. Test away from your computer's original paths. If the data are readable but images are unavailable, correct the dependency package instead of repeatedly exporting identical metadata. Record the successful transfer method and any unsupported fields. Keep research data, original scans, and restored viewing derivatives separately identifiable. An ImgHeal image can accompany the source when permitted, but the export should describe which version it is and must not imply that a generated detail is part of the original evidence.
Check this workflow
- Define whether images are required in the handoff.
- Inspect one representative JSON-LD export.
- Test receipt without the original computer's paths.

Questions about this restoration task
Can I delete the source photos after exporting JSON-LD?
No. Do not treat a research-data export as proof that the source images have been backed up. Preserve and test the files separately.
