Find Punctuated Family Names in a Tropy Research Project
By ImgHeal · Updated
A Tropy search that misses a punctuated name may be a query problem rather than a missing photo. Start with a record you know exists, then test its exact name and a simpler term. Keep alternative name spellings as documented research information rather than repeatedly changing the source wording.

Establish a known item and searchable wording
Open one expected record directly from its list or project view. Confirm where the name is recorded: metadata, a typed note, or only pixels inside the photo. Tropy's documented search covers metadata and notes; text visible in an image is not automatically a typed searchable name. Write down a distinctive word from the actual record. Clear any previous query and establish that the record appears before building a more complicated family-name search.
Change one query feature at a time
The search documentation recommends quotation marks for terms containing punctuation and describes combining words with AND. Try the documented quoted form for an apostrophe-containing surname, then compare with a distinctive unpunctuated part of the name. Record the successful query in the project guide. Avoid changing a source caption simply to satisfy a search box. If the family uses several spellings, put the variants in a clearly identified research note while preserving the original transcription elsewhere.
Check context before treating results as evidence
A result means the search found matching project text, not that every person in the returned photos has been identified correctly. Open the relevant metadata or note and follow its evidence reference. Check active lists or other scope restrictions when a known item still seems absent. Before a large new import, clear the search so newly added photos are not merely hidden from view. For a restored viewing copy, keep the stable source ID searchable as well as any family name; this provides a reliable route between the research record and a separately labeled ImgHeal output.
Check this workflow
- Prove a known record is present first.
- Test punctuation using the documented query form.
- Open the matching note before making an identity claim.

Questions about this restoration task
Will searching a name read handwriting inside every photo?
Do not assume so. Add a reviewed transcription or metadata value when you need the inscription to be searchable, and retain the image supporting that reading.
