Embedded Metadata or Sidecar Notes for Family Photos?
By ImgHeal · Updated
Choose where names and provenance should live, while keeping an external inventory as a durable reference.
Define the record
Embedded metadata travels with some file formats, while sidecar files and inventories can hold longer notes without altering the image. Neither method is guaranteed to survive every app, conversion, or upload.
Apply the system consistently
Test your chosen software with copies. Add a stable photo ID to the image record, sidecar, and inventory so they can be matched even if one layer is stripped.
Test that another person can use it
Export a sample, move it to another device, and check whether names, dates, and rights notes remain readable. Keep a plain, open inventory as the fallback.
Check before you finish
- Use a shared stable identifier.
- Test metadata after export.
- Keep an external inventory.
