Choose a Lightroom Preview Type for Photo-Scan Review

By ImgHeal · Updated

Lightroom Classic previews support browsing and review; they are not replacements for the stored scan. Choose a preview workflow that makes inspection practical on your display, then check important details at an appropriate zoom with the original file available.

Identify the review task

A quick album overview and close inspection of a small inscription place different demands on previews. Decide whether you need to compare overall framing, read fine lettering, or inspect restoration artifacts. Use a representative scan containing both a face and a written note. Record the actual pixel dimensions of that source so you will not mistake a faster screen display for a lower-resolution archived file.

Review preview options deliberately

Adobe documents Minimal, Embedded and Sidecar, Standard, and 1:1 preview choices in Lightroom Classic's import workflow. Choose according to the work you are about to do and the available storage. Standard previews suit ordinary browsing, while larger inspection may require additional rendering. Preview generation can take time on a large collection. Do not conclude that the importer has omitted a photo merely because a high-quality preview is not immediately ready.

Check the image after rendering settles

Browse the representative scan, wait for its rendering indicator to finish, and compare the view at the zoom you intend to use. For fine text, inspect the source at a close view rather than relying only on a small grid cell. If a preview seems stale, investigate preview rebuilding using the application's documented controls before changing the image. Keep that troubleshooting separate from sharpening or enlargement decisions.

Keep preview storage out of quality claims

Document the preview choice for the review workstation, especially if relatives use different displays. The archive's quality still depends on the actual image files and capture process. When exporting an upload copy for ImgHeal, inspect the exported dimensions directly. A responsive Lightroom grid does not prove the export has enough detail, and a slow preview is not evidence that restoration will improve the source.

Check this workflow before using the result

  • Choose the review task first.
  • Wait for rendering before judging softness.
  • Verify exported dimensions separately.

Questions about this restoration task

Does building a 1:1 preview enlarge the master scan?

No. It creates a viewing resource for Lightroom. It does not add captured detail or rewrite the stored master image.
