Check Export Resolution When Lightroom Uses a Smart Preview
By ImgHeal · Updated
Smart Previews let Lightroom Classic work while originals are disconnected, but they should not be confused with full-resolution scans. Before delivering or restoring an image, establish whether its original is available and inspect the dimensions of the actual exported file.

Identify which source is connected
Select the scan and inspect Lightroom's source-availability information near the histogram. Adobe documents different states for an original, a Smart Preview, or both. Write down which state applies before exporting. A photograph can remain editable even when the external archive drive is absent, so a functioning Develop panel does not demonstrate that Lightroom can read the full original at that moment.
Make a labeled offline test
If you need to understand your workflow, export a noncritical test while only its Smart Preview is available. Use a distinct destination and filename so it cannot overwrite a previous full-size delivery. Inspect that export's pixel dimensions in an ordinary file viewer. Keep a note of the export resizing choices as well, because a small output can result from either the available source or an explicit size limit.
Reconnect before the final delivery
Connect the drive that contains the actual scan and confirm Lightroom recognizes the original again. If it reports a missing path, resolve that relationship without importing an unrelated duplicate. Export another clearly labeled trial with the intended size settings, then compare the two outputs. This direct comparison establishes what your configuration produces; it is more useful than assuming that every file exported from an offline session is automatically a master-quality delivery.
Preserve the source and review pixels
Use the verified export as a separate upload copy for ImgHeal when appropriate. Keep the original scan outside that generated workflow. Inspect the restored result against the source at meaningful detail locations, such as eyes and handwriting. Smart Preview availability is a convenience for editing, not a statement that lost historical information has been recovered or that an enlargement will print at every size.
Check this workflow before using the result
- Read the original/Smart Preview state.
- Label offline and connected trials separately.
- Check the final export's dimensions.

Questions about this restoration task
Can an editable offline photo still lack its original?
Yes. Smart Previews can support editing without the original connected. Confirm availability before exporting the final delivery.
