Why a Photo Scan Changes Appearance During Lightroom Import

By ImgHeal · Updated

A scan that changes as Lightroom finishes importing may have received an import preset or a different rendering. Inspect the import settings before repairing the photograph again. Establish which change was applied to the catalog version while preserving the received image file.

Choose a clear visual reference

Open the received scan in its usual viewer and note one recognizable area, such as a pale border or a dark jacket. Confirm that Lightroom is showing the same file, not an older restoration with a similar name. Compare under the same display conditions. A brief embedded preview followed by a rendered view can look like an edit, so wait for the preview process to settle before describing the difference.

Inspect Apply During Import

In Lightroom Classic's Import dialog, review the Apply During Import panel and its Develop Settings choice. A preset can apply tonal, color, or other adjustments as files enter the catalog. Check the selected preset rather than assuming a previous session left the panel neutral. Also inspect any saved import preset that restores these choices. Use Adobe's instructions for your installed edition, because the available import controls differ from cloud Lightroom.

Compare an untreated catalog version

On a separate trial record or virtual copy, inspect the Develop settings and history to identify the applied adjustments. Use a controlled reset or the relevant preset removal on that trial rather than repeatedly compensating with new sliders. Compare the border and jacket again. If the change remains without the import adjustment, investigate color handling and preview rendering separately; an import preset is a diagnosis to test, not a universal explanation.

Save a deliberate import recipe

After you understand the cause, save or document an import configuration suitable for your scan project. Test it with another color and monochrome scan before applying it broadly. Keep any creative look as a named editing choice after ingestion. If you later use ImgHeal, send a clearly identified upload copy and judge its output against the untouched scan, not against an accidentally preprocessed catalog version.

Check this workflow before using the result

  • Match the actual source filename.
  • Check Develop Settings during import.
  • Test an untreated catalog version.

Questions about this restoration task

Should I rescan when an import preset changed the tones?

First compare the received scan without that preset. A catalog adjustment does not establish that the original scan needs replacing.
