How to Reconnect a Moved Photo Folder in Lightroom Without Reimporting It
By ImgHeal · Updated
The files are still on your drive, but Lightroom shows them as missing. A broken location link can look like lost photographs even when the originals have simply moved or their disk is disconnected.

Check that the originals really exist
Locate the missing folder in the operating system and open a few actual images. Confirm the disk is connected and the files are complete, not cloud-only placeholders or preview exports. Compare filenames and folder structure with the location Lightroom says it expected. If no original can be found, this is a source-recovery problem; relinking cannot recreate a photograph that is not available on any retained copy.
Choose the matching parent folder
Adobe documents finding a missing folder from the Folders panel when an entire directory has moved. Identify the appropriate parent rather than reconnecting many individual images to an arbitrary collection of similarly named files. Camera or scanner basenames can repeat across albums. Use folder context, sample subjects, and file dimensions to establish that the candidate is the same source set before confirming the new location.
Relink within the copied or intended catalog
Back up the catalog, make sure the correct catalog is open, and follow Lightroom Classic's documented Find Missing Folder workflow. Do not start a fresh import merely to remove missing-file symbols; that can create another catalog entry without carrying the relationship you expected. Reconnect the location and inspect a few known edits, checking that the application now reads the original images rather than only displaying retained previews.
Verify a normal export and record the change
Create a temporary export from one reconnected file and inspect it independently. Note the old and new parent paths in the archive record, including a changed disk name or drive letter when relevant. Update any backup coverage affected by the move. Once the relationship is restored, use the application's documented organization tools for later moves so an ordinary folder tidy-up does not repeatedly break the catalog's view of your family scans.
Check before you finish
- Find and open the real originals first.
- Match the parent folder using more than filenames.
- Relink through Lightroom and test an export.

Questions about this restoration task
Should I import the folder again to fix the missing symbols?
First check the documented relinking workflow. Reimporting can create separate entries and leave the original catalog relationships unresolved.
