Should You Turn Off Automatic Scan Enhancement?

By ImgHeal · Updated

Compare a neutral capture with an enhanced preview before committing to a master file.

Record the active settings

Check automatic contrast, color correction, sharpening, and dust options in the scanner software. Names vary by device. Save a record of the settings so a future capture can be compared meaningfully instead of relying on memory.

Make a paired comparison

Capture one representative print with minimal processing and another with the automatic settings. Compare pale fabric, dark hair, fine lettering, and print edges at equal size. More vivid color is not enough if the treatment removes subtle information.

Keep an adaptable source

Retain a minimally processed useful capture even when you prefer the enhanced version for viewing. A master with clipped highlights or heavy smoothing limits later editing. Make output copies from the retained source rather than repeatedly processing the enhanced export.

Check before you finish

  • Record scanner enhancement settings.
  • Keep a less processed source capture.
