Identify Zotero's Stored Photo Copy Without Losing the Archive Master
By ImgHeal · Updated
A stored attachment in Zotero can be a managed copy of a photo imported from your archive. Identify which file you are opening before editing or moving it. Keep the archival source's role explicit so a convenience attachment does not silently become the only surviving master.

Record the source before adding it
Note the original photograph's stable ID, full filename, and archive location in a private inventory. Keep source and edited versions under distinct names. When adding a stored attachment, use an authorized working sample first and preserve the original file. Zotero's file documentation explains that a locally added stored file is copied into its managed data arrangement. A duplicate-looking image in two places can therefore represent two roles, but it is not automatically a complete backup strategy with independent recovery checks.
Locate the file the attachment uses
Use Zotero's documented file-location action to inspect the attachment's actual path. Compare it with the original inventory and, if needed, a checksum. Record whether the opened file is the stored copy or a linked archive source. Do not rename or reorganize the application's internal storage folders manually. If you need an image outside Zotero, use the supported attachment or export workflow and inspect the resulting copy. Keep bibliographic descriptions on the parent record rather than relying on internal folder names for meaning.
Choose a separate restoration working copy
Before uploading to ImgHeal or another editor, save a clearly named working copy in a normal project folder. Keep the untouched master and research attachment distinguishable, and record the source of the working copy. After processing, compare the output with the unedited source and attach it only as a labeled derivative if it belongs in the research library. Review your backup plan for both the archive master and Zotero data. Successful access today does not prove either arrangement can be recovered after accidental deletion or device failure.
Check this workflow
- Record the archive source before import.
- Locate the attachment's actual managed file.
- Prepare restoration work outside internal storage folders.

Questions about this restoration task
Should I organize Zotero's storage subfolders by hand?
Use supported application workflows instead. Preserve your own archive organization separately and avoid breaking managed attachment references.
