How Checksums Help Verify a Photo-Archive Copy
By ImgHeal · Updated
Use file comparisons to check transfers while recognizing what they cannot establish.
Create a file inventory
List relative paths and file sizes before copying the archive. Generate checksums with a trusted local tool when you need stronger byte-for-byte comparison. Store the inventory outside the working edit set so it describes a known version of the files.
Compare after transfer
Generate the same information for the destination and investigate missing or mismatched entries. Do not assume a completed progress bar proves every intended file arrived unchanged. Keep the source until the destination comparison is complete.
Check meaning separately
A matching checksum establishes matching bytes for the compared file, not a correct caption, complete collection, or authentic historical image. Open representative files and reconcile identifiers too. Record the transfer date and comparison result with the backup notes.
Check before you finish
- Compare destination files before removing a source.
- Pair byte checks with inventory and opening checks.
