Attach a Family Photo Scan to a Descriptive Zotero Record
By ImgHeal · Updated
A photo scan is easier to cite and understand in Zotero when it belongs to a descriptive parent record. Record the photograph's source and known context, then attach the digital files. A standalone image filename rarely supplies the information a future family researcher needs.

Describe the source object first
Choose the item type that fits your documented research practice and enter the photograph's known title or a clearly editorial description. Record its stable archive ID, repository or family source, and uncertain date wording. Do not turn a scan timestamp into the scene date or make the digitizer the original photographer without evidence. Keep unknown information honest. A useful record can identify the source and its limits even when the creator and exact year remain unresolved.
Attach distinct source and viewing files
Zotero's file documentation distinguishes child attachments from standalone files. Attach the untouched scan to the intended parent and name the attachment's role clearly. Add a back view or restored viewing copy separately when needed. Check whether each file is stored or linked under your chosen workflow, because that affects portability. Retain your archive master outside a casual drag-and-drop experiment. Do not assume that automatically obtained metadata for another file type will supply an accurate description of a family photograph.
Test the record as a citation source
Open the attachment from its parent, inspect the full image, and compare its object ID with the descriptive record. Generate a small citation or report and check whether it distinguishes the photograph from the online page or book where it was found. Add a source note if the relationship needs explanation. Keep ImgHeal output labeled as an edited viewing version rather than replacing the original attachment. Bibliographic structure helps retrieval and citation, but it does not establish that generated features or a family identification are historically correct.
Check this workflow
- Describe the photograph independently of its filename.
- Attach and label each view deliberately.
- Check a sample citation or report.

Questions about this restoration task
Can Zotero infer every old photo's creator and date from the image?
Do not rely on that. Enter supported descriptive information and preserve uncertainty with the source evidence.
