Who Belongs in a Restored Photo's Creator Metadata?
By ImgHeal · Updated
Scanning a portrait does not make you the person who took it. Build a credit record that keeps the original photographer's role visible while still acknowledging the work involved in creating a useful digital copy.

List the actual contributions first
Write a short role list before opening a metadata panel: original photographer, owner of the print, person who scanned it, and person who prepared the viewing restoration. One relative may fill several roles, but do not assume ownership proves authorship. Record the evidence for a studio attribution, such as an imprint or an institutional description. If the photographer is unknown, leave that uncertainty explicit instead of filling the gap with the scanner's name for convenience.
Match roles to supported fields
IPTC Creator identifies the image creator, Credit Line carries a publication credit, and Source records source information; they are not interchangeable. State which image generation your record describes. For a historical portrait attributed to a studio and scanned by a relative, preserve the studio attribution and add a separate digitization note naming the relative and scan date. Use a supported contributor field or Description when needed. Do not invent a copyright claim simply because the editor offers a Copyright Notice box.
Check the exported credit as a reader
Export one viewing copy and open its information in a second metadata-aware application. Confirm that the original photographer has not become the scanner and that a source owner has not been silently presented as the creator. Keep a plain-language credit with the photo record because receiving sites may omit some fields. If an ImgHeal restoration is shared, describe that derivative separately from the original scan. Make the resulting credit understandable without requiring relatives to interpret a list of unexplained names.
Check before sharing this record
- Separate author, owner, digitizer, and editor roles.
- Leave unsupported photographer names unknown.
- Review the credit in the delivered copy.

Questions about this restoration task
Can I put myself in Creator because I scanned the print?
Record the role you actually performed. A scanner credit should not silently replace an original photographer attribution; use a clear digitization note when the available fields cannot express both roles.
