Link a Photo Reference to Its Archive Catalogue Record in Zotero
By ImgHeal · Updated
A photograph and the catalogue page describing it can be related Zotero records without becoming the same source. Link them deliberately and explain the relationship. This helps a family researcher trace a scan back to its context while retaining the correct citation for each resource.

Distinguish the resources being described
Write down what each record represents: the physical photograph, its repository catalogue page, a newspaper reproduction, or a later article interpreting it. Record identifiers and the route by which you obtained the image. A source that reproduces a photograph is not necessarily its creator or original custodian. Keep publication dates separate from the scene date. If two existing records already represent these distinct things, preserve both instead of merging merely because their titles or thumbnail images resemble each other.
Create the supported relationship
Zotero documents related-item links within a library. Use that mechanism for the intended pair and add a short explanatory note when the relationship is not obvious. A generic relation can connect records without expressing every scholarly distinction, so state whether the page describes, reproduces, or discusses the image. Check that both records belong to the intended library and that their URLs or attachment files resolve. Do not create a link to a same-named photograph from another collection without verifying its object identity.
Follow the source chain from both ends
Start with the image record and open its related catalogue source; then return and inspect the scan attachment. Check that another researcher can repeat the route using the supplied identifiers. Generate any needed citation from the record representing the resource actually used, rather than assuming related links automatically add all context to formatted output. Keep an ImgHeal restoration under a distinct derivative label linked to the untouched source. A useful relation documents provenance, but it does not make the catalogue's uncertain identification or the generated restoration more certain.

Questions about this restoration task
Should I merge a catalogue webpage and the photo it describes?
Not simply because they concern the same object. They may have different descriptive and citation roles; relate them when that better preserves the source chain.
