How to Save a Reusable Selection for Photo Retouching
By ImgHeal · Updated
Save a useful selection as a named channel or supported mask in the separate editor's project format. This preserves the selected region for another session or adjustment. Verify it after reopening the document. A selection belongs to particular pixel geometry, so a matching subject in a differently sized or cropped image may not align.

Capture the intended region
Make the selection on the working image and inspect its boundary with an overlay or grayscale view. Include soft transitions where the source calls for them, rather than assuming the marching outline shows every partially selected pixel. Name the selection by purpose, such as protect handwritten caption or repaired background, not simply Alpha 1. Keep the region's intended use in the notes so a later editor does not mistake a damage map for a final subject cutout.
Store it in an editable document
Use the application's supported save-selection function. Photoshop stores reusable selections in alpha channels that can be loaded, modified, and combined later. Save the project in a format that retains those channels and avoid overwriting the only source capture. Reload the channel immediately as a test, then compare the selected region with the original mask. A successful image export does not demonstrate that this project-specific selection survived alongside it.
Verify alignment before reuse
Reopen the project and load the saved selection before applying another change. If transferring it to another document, check pixel dimensions, crop, orientation, and registration. Identical width and height alone do not prove that the content occupies the same coordinates. Inspect eyes, borders, and lettering near the mask boundary. Save a revised mask separately when geometry changed, and export only the resulting ordinary image if the next workflow cannot read project channels.

Questions about this restoration task
Does a JPEG keep my saved selection?
An ordinary JPEG delivery is not an editable mask container. Keep the project containing the saved selection separately from the flattened viewing export.
