How to Keep an Untouched Reference Layer While Editing a Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
Set up a separate image editor so every manual restoration decision can be compared with the same untouched source.
Create a working document
Open a duplicate of your best capture in a separate image editor that supports layers. Keep the original file outside the editing document as well. Name the bottom layer clearly and lock it if the editor offers that option. A reference layer is a convenience for comparison, not a replacement for an independent master file.
Keep the reference aligned
Duplicate the source for editing without moving or resizing only one layer. If you crop the document, retain an uncropped file separately. An accidentally shifted reference makes edges jump during comparison and can look like a restoration defect. Check a few distinct landmarks before using rapid visibility toggling to judge the work.
Compare one change at a time
Place cleanup, tonal work, and optional color interpretation on separately named layers when your editor supports them. Hide and reveal the relevant layer rather than comparing two unrelated exports from memory. Inspect whether the change improves the intended damage while altering a face, caption, or clothing detail that should remain tied to the source.
Export a clearly identified derivative
Save the editable document and a standard image export as different files. If you use ImgHeal, keep its downloaded result as another named version; the manual layer controls described here belong to your separate editor. Compare that result with the same source reference before sharing, and record any reconstructed area whose true appearance is uncertain.
Before you save this version
- An independent untouched master still exists.
- Reference and edited layers remain aligned.
- The delivery export is separate from the editable document.
