How to Inspect a Retouch Mask Beyond the Selection Outline
By ImgHeal · Updated
Inspect the actual mask with a grayscale or colored overlay view instead of relying solely on a moving selection outline. Masks can contain partial values and soft transitions that the outline does not fully describe. Check the affected photograph at the same time so a tidy mask does not conceal a badly chosen repair boundary.

Choose a revealing view
In a separate editor, open the mask or its supported overlay display. Change the overlay color or opacity if it blends into the photograph's dominant colors; that changes visibility, not the mask's underlying purpose. Adobe describes Quick Mask as a temporary editable overlay. Confirm whether you are inspecting a temporary selection, a stored channel, or a layer mask before painting, since changing one may not update the other automatically.
Look for functional errors
Inspect holes inside intended regions, stray marks outside them, uneven transitions, and accidental exclusions around thin objects. A face, signature, or border can be partly affected even when the visible selection outline seems to avoid it. Toggle the adjustment while checking these areas. Do not force a complex source edge into a neat geometric boundary merely to make the mask easier to understand; some soft overlap belongs to the original photograph.
Save a tested mask state
Return to the normal composite and compare the repair at intended viewing size. Make targeted corrections rather than repainting everything. Save the project and reload the mask to confirm that the intended version survives. If another editor receives the file, name the mask's purpose and document whether it protects original evidence or selects a replacement. Export an ordinary image separately for workflows that do not retain editable selections or mask channels.

Questions about this restoration task
Why can an edit affect a region outside the marching outline?
A soft selection can include partially selected pixels beyond the outline. View the actual mask values or overlay and compare the adjustment's visible effect.
