How to Choose a Matching Sample for a Manual Photo Repair

By ImgHeal · Updated

Compare brightness, texture, and direction before sampling pixels in a separate image editor.

Choose the same kind of surface

A clean patch is not automatically a useful patch. Identify whether the damaged area belongs to skin, paper, fabric, sky, or a backdrop. Then look for undamaged material with similar texture and focus. Sampling from a smooth wall to repair a textured jacket may hide the blemish while making the photograph less believable.

Compare light before copying

Inspect the candidate sample's brightness and color against the destination. The two sides of a face can have different light, and a backdrop may gradually darken across the frame. In a separate image editor, test a small reversible repair rather than trusting a tiny color swatch. Matching one sampled pixel does not match the surrounding tonal variation.

Follow the direction of detail

Clothing weave, hair, wood grain, and paper texture can have a visible direction. Choose a sample that respects that structure and any perspective change. Keep the repair small and resample as you move. Do not copy a distinctive feature merely because its tone fits; repeating a mole or badge changes the content of the picture.

Evaluate the patch as part of the image

Toggle the repair off and on, then inspect a normal-size export. Look for a smooth island, a repeated mark, or a patch that becomes visible when contrast changes. If no convincing source exists, consider a partial cleanup or an explicitly reconstructed version. ImgHeal can offer another interpretation, but it cannot establish absent source detail as historical fact.

Before you save this version

  • The sampled material matches the destination surface.
  • Light and texture direction were considered.
  • Distinctive features were not duplicated as filler.
