How to Reduce Dust Spots in Photo Scans
By ImgHeal
Identify capture dust and repair isolated spots without erasing photo texture.
Check where the spot came from
If identical dots appear in several scans at the same position, inspect the scanner glass using its manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Make a fresh capture after the glass is ready. Do not wipe a fragile print to test whether a mark will disappear.
Use a small repair area
For isolated digital spots, choose a healing or cloning brush only slightly larger than the mark. Sample from the same surface and lighting. A dot on a cheek needs different surrounding texture from a dot on a patterned coat; broad automatic dust filters can soften both.
Keep natural texture
Toggle the edit layer and check grain, freckles, and fine lettering. Those details can resemble dust at a small viewing size. If many spots cover the image, test a small crop before processing the whole scan and retain the untreated capture for comparison.
Before you finish
- Check repeated marks across scans.
- Use local texture for each repair.
- Preserve freckles, grain, and fine print.
