Use Photoshop Layer Comps to Review Photo Layout States
By ImgHeal · Updated
Layer Comps can store selected presentation states inside a Photoshop document. Use them to compare layouts or visible repair groups, then inspect what each comp actually records. They are not independent originals or an automatic record of every editing decision.

Define the states worth preserving
Choose a specific comparison such as an unretouched scan with a caption versus a repaired viewing version with the same caption. Keep both source layers clearly named. Decide whether the comparison involves visibility alone or also position and appearance. A comp whose purpose is unclear can make a complex document look organized while leaving another editor unable to identify which state was accepted for delivery.
Record the appropriate properties
Adobe documents layer visibility, position, appearance, and certain Smart Object comp selections as recordable properties. Open the Layer Comps panel and choose the properties required by the comparison. Name each comp for its actual role, then apply it and inspect the important layers. A comp does not promise to restore every possible document setting or undo pixel edits made after its creation, so keep the editable source structure and versioned saves intact.
Verify the exported state
Apply the intended comp before exporting and inspect the rendered result outside Photoshop. Confirm the correct caption, crop, and repair groups appear together. Record the comp name with the output filename. If a layer changes later, review whether its comps need updating rather than assuming the old state remains exact. Preserve the untouched scan independently; a set of layout states inside one document is useful working information, but it is not a substitute for separately stored masters and an explicit acceptance note.
Check this workflow before using the result
- Give each comp a defined purpose.
- Record only understood properties.
- Verify the applied comp before export.

Questions about this restoration task
Does a Layer Comp preserve every past pixel state?
No. It records selected layer-state properties. Keep versioned editable files and untouched sources for recovery and evidence.
