How to Keep a Useful Edit History for a Restored Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
Name versions by purpose and record meaningful changes without replacing the source.
Keep a fixed source identifier
Use the same base identifier for the source scan and its derivatives. Add descriptive suffixes for scratch repair, tone correction, or colorization. Avoid final-final filenames that obscure which file contains which changes.
Write a short change note
Record the input version, date, editor or tool, and the changes you accepted. Mark reconstructed areas and unresolved identity questions. A plain text record is useful even when a layered project already contains detailed editing steps.
Separate accepted and trial exports
Keep review candidates apart from the delivery set so relatives do not receive rejected versions by accident. Retain a moderate alternative when choices are subjective. Back up the change notes together with the files they describe.
Check before you finish
- Use descriptive version suffixes.
- Link each version to its input and edit note.
