How to Plan a Digital Copy of an Autochrome Photograph
By ImgHeal · Updated
An autochrome is already a color photographic object, not a black-and-white image waiting for AI colorization. Arrange an appropriate low-exposure, supported transparency capture with knowledgeable help, keeping cover glass and seals intact. Retain the original color record and distinguish any later brightness, color, or detail interpretation from what the source actually shows.

Confirm the process and construction
Use a reliable collection description or qualified identification rather than diagnosing an unknown plate solely from an online photograph. The Victoria and Albert Museum describes autochromes as glass-based color-screen images with a characteristic soft appearance. Record the whole plate, labels, and housing where safely accessible. Do not open seals, remove cover glass, or wipe an image layer to investigate its structure. The protected assembly is part of what needs preservation.
Plan exposure and support
Ask a specialist how the object should be illuminated and held for a useful capture. Autochromes require particular care around light exposure, and the V&A explains why their viewing conditions are controlled. Do not use a hot projector or repeatedly hold the plate to a bright window for inspection. Define the required views in advance so handling and exposure are purposeful rather than a long trial-and-error session seeking a more saturated appearance.
Preserve color before interpretation
Keep an untouched capture and record the copying conditions. Compare later adjustments with the source, watching for crushed shadows, invented sharp texture, and changes to the characteristic color appearance. A reference image may help assessment but does not authenticate newly generated colors or fine detail. Label a modern display interpretation clearly, retain complete-object records, and avoid treating a colorized output as an improvement merely because it looks more like a modern photograph.
Before you finish
- Process identification is supported.
- Cover glass and seals remain intact.
- Original color and later interpretation are separated.

Questions about this restoration task
Should I run an autochrome through black-and-white photo colorization?
That would create a new interpretation of an already colored source. Preserve a suitable source capture first and use any creative treatment only as a clearly labeled derivative.
