How to Digitize a Hand-Colored Old Photograph
By ImgHeal · Updated
Preserve original applied color as part of the object instead of treating it as an AI colorization target.
Collect color evidence
Hand coloring is part of the surviving photograph. Capture it in color under neutral, even light and include the borders. Do not assume uneven or unusual color should be corrected away.
Create the colorized version
Keep a color master and make tone or damage edits on a duplicate. Avoid automatic colorization, which can replace deliberate pigments with newly generated ones. Compare delicate cheek, lip, clothing, and background tints closely.
Record what remains uncertain
If you make a modern recolored interpretation, label it separately. The primary restored copy should retain the visible hand coloring and its variation.
Check before you finish
- Capture the original pigments in color.
- Avoid automatic recoloring of the master.
- Label any modern recolored version.
