Use VIAF to Separate Same-Name Photographers or Photo Subjects
By ImgHeal · Updated
VIAF connects authority information for named people and organizations across participating libraries. It can help separate same-name creators or locate spelling variants. Use it as a research aid, not as proof that a particular photograph belongs to the person whose name looks familiar.

Start from the name actually recorded
Transcribe the name from the photograph, publication, or catalog record with any initials or uncertainty intact. Record the source of that wording before searching. OCLC describes VIAF as a service combining authority data from participating institutions. A match may include variants in other languages or scripts, but similar spellings can still refer to different entities. Keep candidate records separate and note the identifiers rather than selecting a record simply because it has the fullest biography.
Compare contextual identifiers and linked authorities
Inspect dates, roles, associated works, and links to contributing authority records where available. Use those details to test whether the candidate fits the photographer, publisher, writer, or subject you are researching. An authority cluster can require interpretation, so compare the original contributing source when a detail matters. Preserve discrepancies and avoid copying a preferred library heading over a historical signature as if the signature had been written differently. Both forms have distinct roles in the research trail.
Use the result to improve searches, not certify a photo
Record supported variants and identifiers in your private research note, then search relevant archives using those forms. A creator authority does not establish authorship of an unsigned print, and a subject authority does not identify a face. Keep the object-level attribution evidence separate. When sharing a restored photograph, cite the actual source of the image and its supported creator statement; do not attach a famous name merely because VIAF provided a plausible match to an ambiguous inscription.
Keep the evidence trail usable
- Keep the recorded name and source wording.
- Compare dates, roles, and contributing records.
- Separate authority identity from object attribution.

Questions about this restoration task
Does a VIAF match prove who made an unsigned photograph?
No. It helps identify a named entity and its variants. Attribution of the physical photograph needs object-level evidence.
