How to Record an Uncertain Date for an Old Photograph

By ImgHeal · Updated

Use explicit estimates instead of converting a guess into a permanent date.

Separate kinds of dates

Distinguish an event date, a print date, a mailing date, and the digitization date. Write down which one a visible inscription appears to describe. A filename or metadata timestamp alone may reflect a later copying step.

Record the evidence

List clues such as a known occasion, a family recollection, or a caption. Keep ranges and approximate dates explicit, for example circa 1960 or between two known events. Avoid relying on generated clothing or facial details from a restored image.

Allow correction

Use a stable image identifier so the date can change without breaking links to source scans and notes. Save the prior estimate and the reason for the update. Display uncertainty in public captions instead of hiding it only in private research notes.

Check before you finish

  • Name the kind of date being recorded.
  • Keep estimates explicit and revisable.
