Check a Photographer's Name with Getty ULAN
By ImgHeal · Updated
Getty's Union List of Artist Names can help investigate a creator name found on a photograph or catalog record. Check entity type, name variants, dates, and sources. Finding a plausible photographer record does not by itself attribute an unsigned or ambiguously marked print.

Preserve the creator wording on the object
Transcribe the studio imprint, signature, or catalog credit literally, including uncertain initials and any place name. Distinguish a photographer, publisher, dealer, and later owner when the source makes those roles clear. Getty's ULAN guidance explains record types and preferred names. A corporate body and an individual can have similar names, and a studio can continue beyond one person's career. Record those possibilities before linking the imprint to a familiar biographical entry.
Compare the authority context with the photo evidence
Inspect name variants, life or activity dates, roles, relationships, and cited sources where available. Compare the studio locality and proposed period with independent evidence from the print or its provenance. Keep conflicting details in your notes rather than choosing a variant that removes the conflict. An authority's preferred name is a retrieval tool; it does not rewrite the spelling printed on the object. Follow the supplied source references when you need to understand the basis of a particular biographical statement.
Keep attribution at the object level
Use the authority record to organize further searches and avoid merging different creators. To attribute the photograph, retain the actual imprint, contemporary publication credit, negative record, or other relevant evidence. If authorship remains uncertain, describe it as attributed or unresolved rather than using the authority record to supply certainty. Preserve the original image and citation with any restored copy. AI reconstruction of an incomplete signature should remain an edit and cannot serve as proof that the object was made by the selected creator.

Questions about this restoration task
Does ULAN authenticate a photograph or signature?
No. It is an authority vocabulary for named entities. Authenticity and attribution require examination of the object and its supporting evidence.
