Why a Photo in a PDF Can Print at the Wrong Physical Size

By ImgHeal · Updated

A photo layout was designed to fit a particular frame, but the printed version is smaller. First check page scaling in the PDF print workflow before changing the image dimensions or rebuilding the restoration.

Confirm what the PDF page contains

Inspect the PDF's page dimensions and the intended image area within it. A photograph positioned on a larger page is not the same as a page whose edges match the photograph. Note whether the design includes margins, captions, or a mat-opening guide. Save the original layout so a print-dialog experiment cannot replace the dimensions that were deliberately chosen.

Read the scaling option before printing

In Acrobat, the Size controls distinguish Actual size from Fit and other scaling choices. Adobe describes Actual size as printing without scaling, while content outside the paper's available area can be cropped. Fit changes the page to suit the selected printable area. Select the intended paper and orientation first, then choose the scaling behavior that matches your layout's purpose.

Measure an inexpensive proof

Print a sample containing a known-length reference or an easily measured image boundary. Use a ruler on the physical sheet instead of assuming an on-screen zoom setting shows real size. Check both width and height and inspect edges for clipping. If the printer driver offers additional scaling, ensure that it has not applied another resize after the PDF application's own settings.

Keep the successful settings with the layout

Record the PDF version, paper, selected scaling option, and measured proof. If the image cannot fit within the device's printable area, redesign a delivery copy or choose suitable output equipment rather than repeatedly resampling the master photo. Check a new proof whenever you change printers or page sizes. A dimensionally correct PDF alone does not prove that every downstream print dialog will preserve its scale.

Check before you finish

  • Check page size and image placement separately.
  • Read the selected print-scaling behavior.
  • Measure a proof and inspect its edges for clipping.

Questions about this restoration task

Does Actual size guarantee that nothing will be cut off?

No. It avoids scaling, but content outside the selected paper's printable area can be cropped. Verify the paper, margins, orientation, and physical proof together.
