Why GIMP Undo History Is Gone After Reopening a Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
A saved XCF project can preserve layers and still reopen without the previous session's Undo History. That does not necessarily mean the file is corrupt. Understand what the project retained before trying to reconstruct an earlier photo edit from a history list that is no longer available.

Separate history from document structure
Inspect the reopened project for retained source layers, masks, and editable effects. GIMP documents that its Undo History is not saved as part of an XCF file. Layers and other retained structures may still let you revise a decision even though the sequence of earlier operations is absent. Do not flatten the project in an attempt to repair the history. Identify which change you need to reverse and whether its input still exists within the document or in an independent source file.
Use a retained checkpoint when available
Compare the current project with a known earlier saved version rather than assuming that a file with a similar name is the correct predecessor. Note source dimensions, visible edits, and the decision you are investigating. If a needed step was applied directly to the only layer and no earlier source survives, an empty history cannot supply those overwritten pixels. Avoid repeatedly undoing and making experimental new edits in an open original session, since changing the sequence can also discard redo options you were hoping to examine.
Plan reversibility for the next session
Retain an untouched source outside the project and save meaningful checkpoints before committing difficult repairs. Prefer editable structures when they serve the task, and keep a short note of decisions that would be hard to infer from layer names. Test reopening a copy to understand which controls survive. A delivery JPEG is not a substitute for the working project, and a working project is not a substitute for an independent source. Those roles make later review more dependable than relying on session history alone.
Check the working document
- Retained layers were distinguished from Undo History.
- An earlier checkpoint was verified before use.
- Future revisions have an independent source.

Questions about this restoration task
Does saving more often preserve the complete undo list?
Not in GIMP's documented XCF behavior. Saving protects the current document state. Preserve editable structures and separate checkpoints for decisions you may need to revisit later.
