Keep a Fixed Reference Scan Visible While Editing in Lightroom
By ImgHeal · Updated
Reference View in Lightroom Classic lets a fixed reference remain visible while you adjust another photo. Use it to maintain a consistent tone or inspect a source relationship. Keep the reference's identity and purpose explicit, especially when the two images are different captures or versions.

Choose a reference for a narrow reason
Select an untouched scan when checking whether a local change altered the photograph. For a series, you might instead choose an accepted tonal example, but that is an appearance reference rather than evidence of the current scene. Record that distinction. A sibling's portrait can suggest family resemblance without proving the shape of an obscured eye in another photograph.
Set the reference and active image deliberately
Adobe documents Reference View as a Develop-module comparison tool. Place the intended reference on its reference side and confirm which image remains active for adjustment. Check filenames or identifying details before changing a slider. A stable comparison depends on keeping those roles clear; if you accidentally replace the reference while navigating, the visual standard changes even though the editing controls appear familiar.
Compare comparable features
Use matched areas when the files depict the same scan, and account for differences in crop or scale. When the reference is another photograph, compare only the attribute it can reasonably support, such as overall paper tone across a scanning session. Avoid forcing skin or fabric to match when lighting and materials differ. Judge the active photograph on its own visible evidence as well as the reference.
Record the accepted relationship
Note the reference filename and the decision it supported. Export a labeled candidate and inspect it outside Lightroom before sharing. If an ImgHeal result is among the versions, keep the original scan alongside it and identify generated interpretation. A reference view can make review more disciplined, but it cannot turn an unrelated image into historical proof or guarantee identity-preserving reconstruction.

- State why the reference is relevant.
- Confirm active and reference roles.
- Record the reference filename with the decision.

Questions about this restoration task
Should every scan in an album match one reference's color?
No. Different paper, lighting, aging, and capture conditions may justify different appearances. Use the reference for a defined comparison rather than forcing uniformity.
