How to Protect Important Edges During Manual Photo Cleanup
By ImgHeal · Updated
Keep collars, faces, lettering, and object boundaries intact while repairing nearby damage in a separate image editor.
Mark the boundaries that matter
Before cleanup, identify the lines that describe the subject: a jaw, spectacle frame, collar, window frame, or letter stroke. Damage near these edges can tempt a broad repair that rounds or erases them. Compare with the untouched source and make a short note of any boundary already missing, so uncertainty is not mistaken for a repair target.
Work on one side at a time
In a separate image editor, use an appropriate selection or mask to limit a repair to one surface when necessary. Sample from the same side of the boundary. Blending across a dark jacket and pale wall can pull one tone into the other. Keep the mask adjustable rather than making an irreversible cutout on the only copy.
Inspect the transition at useful magnification
Zoom in to place the repair, then step back to normal viewing size. A technically neat edge can still look unnaturally hard or soft compared with neighboring features. Match the source's existing focus rather than drawing a new sharp outline. For missing lettering or facial contours, leave a restrained result when the true shape cannot be supported.
Check the automated version separately
If you try ImgHeal as well, compare the same boundaries in its output against the master. Do not assume a cleaner-looking contour preserves identity or the exact wording of a sign. Save manual and automated results as separate versions until you choose a delivery copy, and keep the source available for future correction.
Before you save this version
- Critical boundaries were identified before repair.
- Samples do not cross unrelated surfaces.
- Edge softness matches the surrounding photograph.
