Open Photo Versions as Separate GIMP Layers for Comparison
By ImgHeal · Updated
Open as Layers places additional images inside the current GIMP document. It can support a source-versus-candidate comparison without repeatedly switching files. Check layer identity, dimensions, and alignment before judging differences, and preserve the original source files outside the comparison project.

Choose related files deliberately
Gather the untouched scan and the exact restoration or edit being assessed. Confirm filenames, dimensions, and crop relationships before importing them. A similarly named photo from another pose can create a convincing but invalid comparison. Create a new working project for review instead of using the only source document as a disposable scratch area, and keep the original files read-only in your preservation workflow when practical.
Inspect the imported layers
GIMP documents opening images as layers in an existing document. After insertion, name each layer by its source and version role. Check offsets, transparency, and canvas coverage. The imported files may not have matching pixel dimensions or framing, so automatic overlap is not proof of registration. Use a deliberate comparison alignment that does not rewrite the original scan, and identify any resampling applied only for the review.
Compare a defined set of details
Toggle visibility or use an appropriate comparison view to inspect faces, writing, borders, and damaged areas. Keep the same feature and scale in view. Record differences that matter, including detail removed as well as detail added. Save the comparison XCF separately and export a clearly labeled proof if relatives need to review it. A layered comparison records the versions you examined; it does not turn plausible generated features into original evidence or replace the full source files and their contextual notes.
Check this workflow before using the result
- Confirm the two source identities.
- Name layers by version role.
- Check geometry before comparing pixels.

Questions about this restoration task
Does Open as Layers automatically register two scans?
No. Inspect dimensions, offsets, and crop differences. Importing into one document is separate from aligning corresponding source details.
