Use GIMP's Navigation Preview to Inspect a Large Scan Systematically
By ImgHeal · Updated
GIMP's Navigation preview helps locate the current view within a large image. Use it to make a repeatable inspection route across a scan. A close view is useful only when you know which part of the photograph you have checked and what remains unseen.

Plan the inspection regions
Identify faces, inscriptions, corners, and major damage before zooming in. Record a simple review order using the source item's orientation. A large group photograph may need several separate facial checks, while a written back requires attention to line endings and faint marks. Keep the full source visible at overview size first so close inspection does not lose the relationship between a detail and the complete image.
Use navigation to maintain context
GIMP documents the Navigation dialog and its preview rectangle for the visible region. Move through the image deliberately while reading the current zoom level. Use shared landmarks to avoid skipping a strip between adjacent views. If a candidate was cropped or resized, confirm that the navigation position still corresponds to the intended source feature. A small preview is a location aid, not a sufficient view for judging repaired texture or tiny writing.
Record what was actually reviewed
After the detail pass, return to the whole image and check composition and broad tonal consistency. Note any region that remained unclear rather than marking the entire scan as approved. For a before-and-after review, repeat the same route on the candidate and compare the corresponding features. Save the accepted output separately and retain the source. Systematic navigation improves coverage, but it does not prove every generated detail is authentic or replace relevant family and archival evidence where identity or text is uncertain.

Questions about this restoration task
Does inspecting one sharp-looking face establish the whole group is correct?
No. Review each important region and record unresolved areas. A navigation plan helps avoid treating one successful detail as proof of the entire image.
