Keep a GIMP XCF Working File Separate from a Photo Export
By ImgHeal · Updated
Saving an XCF working project and exporting a viewing image are separate tasks in GIMP. Keep both when the editing structure matters. A correct-looking JPEG is not proof that you retained the layers, masks, and paths needed to revise the restoration later.

Define the two deliverables
Name one file as the editable working project and another as the accepted viewing export. Keep the untouched scan independently. Identify which layers, masks, paths, and notes are important to future editing so you can test them. Avoid calling every output master: the scan records the captured source, the XCF records an editing project, and the viewing file presents a particular result for a recipient.
Use Save and Export intentionally
GIMP's manual distinguishes saving in its native XCF format from exporting other formats. Follow the supported Save workflow for the project and Export workflow for the delivery. Read any warning about features a chosen output cannot preserve. Do not assume a later export updates every earlier viewing file or that an exported JPEG replaces the need to save recent project changes. Record both filenames while the intended state is still visible.
Reopen the project and output
Close and reopen a verified saved copy when practical, then inspect the needed layers, masks, and path names. Open the viewing export separately and check its dimensions and appearance. A successful project reopen and a successful image export answer different questions. Back up both alongside the source and a short editing note. This guide concerns GIMP's specific save/export lifecycle; choosing a native project format does not guarantee that another application can reproduce every feature or that any generated repair is historically faithful.
Check this workflow before using the result
- Assign source, project, and export roles.
- Save recent project changes explicitly.
- Reopen and test both deliverables.

Questions about this restoration task
Is exporting a JPEG enough to preserve my GIMP layers?
No. Keep and verify the XCF working file separately when editable layers, masks, paths, or other project structure are needed.
