How to Photograph a Photo Box Before Rehousing Its Contents
By ImgHeal · Updated
Photograph the box exterior, labels, and visible arrangement before reorganizing its contents. Use references that connect overview images with each safely removed group. The record should show how material was found, without claiming that neighboring pictures share a date or event. Do not expose unstable items merely to make the documentation more complete.

Choose the overview sequence
Start with the container closed, then record its safe open state and informative labels. Use consistent orientation so someone can understand which side is being shown. Keep a small reference card outside the object if needed, never attached to a photograph. A complete box record can preserve a pencil note or divider position that individual image crops would lose. Avoid taking dozens of unlabeled close-ups with no connection to the whole.
Record groups as they move
Assign a group reference before lifting stable material and keep its wrapper, envelope, or divider association. Capture the now-visible layer when useful rather than reconstructing the entire arrangement later from memory. Do not spread loose images across the floor or use clips to keep groups together. If a box contains broken, wet, stuck, or suspect material, pause and obtain handling advice instead of treating the documentation plan as permission to disturb it.
Link the record to new housing
Store overview files beside the inventory and connect old container references to the replacement box and folder labels. Note any association that remains uncertain. A later restoration can use an individual source scan while its original box context remains available for research. Keep the full sequence even if some photographs are later sorted thematically; rehousing should improve physical support without silently replacing the evidence of how the collection was originally received.

Questions about this restoration task
Does being in the same box prove photos belong to one event?
No. The overview records an observed arrangement. Event or date relationships require additional evidence and should remain qualified when uncertain.
