How to Keep Photo Envelopes Connected to Their Pictures
By ImgHeal · Updated
Preserve processing labels, dates, and handwritten groupings when digitizing loose prints.
Capture the envelope first
Record visible writing, processing labels, and the envelope's existing contents before sorting prints. A date on the envelope may describe processing rather than the photographed event. Keep uncertain relationships explicit instead of assuming every print belongs to the same occasion.
Assign a group identifier
Give the envelope a collection identifier and each photograph a linked item identifier. Preserve the original order in notes before reorganizing a browsing set by subject. Photograph the grouping when that helps document how it was found.
Separate browsing from provenance
Create event albums as a secondary view while keeping the envelope relationships in the index. Record any later additions or corrections. The convenient new organization should not erase evidence of the collection's original arrangement.
Check before you finish
- Capture labels before sorting.
- Retain original group relationships in the index.
