How to Make an Identification Key for an Old Group Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
Collect names by position while keeping uncertain identities visible.
Define positions consistently
Create a copy with numbered positions or a separate row-and-position diagram. Keep the unmarked source. Define left and right from the viewer's perspective so relatives do not assign different names to the same location.
Collect names with attribution
Record each suggested name with the contributor and confidence level. Ask relatives to review the source as well as the restored image. AI-generated facial changes should not become the basis for confirming a disputed identity.
Publish a clear key
Attach the key using the photograph's stable identifier and label unresolved positions as unknown. Keep conflicting suggestions in the research notes. If you update the key, retain the version date so earlier shared copies can be corrected coherently.
Check before you finish
- Define positions from the viewer's perspective.
- Attribute suggestions and retain uncertainty.
