Export a Tropy Detail Without Confusing It with the Source Photo

By ImgHeal · Updated

Exporting a Tropy selection creates a separate detail image. Treat that file as a derivative with a known parent photo and a stated purpose. Inspect the saved output before sending it, especially when the selection has display adjustments that make faint marks easier to see.

Decide what the recipient needs

A relative identifying a brooch may need a readable crop; an archive evaluating an object may need the whole capture. State which task the detail serves and why the selected region is sufficient. Note any important context outside its edges. Keep the untouched photograph available, and choose an export filename containing the source ID and a detail suffix. Avoid a name that makes an uncertain identification appear settled, such as a person's full name when the purpose of sharing is to discover that identity.

Inspect the selection and its adjustments

Tropy's selection documentation explains that exported selections include applied photo adjustments. Review the active selection, its boundaries, and the appearance before using Export Selection. Save into a delivery folder rather than overwriting an existing master. Open the exported file in another viewer and check the actual region, orientation, dimensions, and visible marks. A different extension is not a reason to skip visual inspection. If the output appears clipped or the tonal change hides a stroke, return to the working selection and make a new labeled version.

Send a small source note alongside the crop

Explain the parent object ID, full source filename, selected location, and adjustments used for readability. State which features remain uncertain. Include the full source or a permitted route to it when appropriate, without exposing private collection paths unnecessarily. Keep received opinions attached to the source record rather than embedded as settled facts in the crop's filename. If you later create an ImgHeal restoration for family viewing, retain this research export as a distinct version so an attractive reconstructed area cannot silently replace the detail on which the discussion was based.

Check this workflow

  • Choose a derivative filename before exporting.
  • Review display adjustments included in the output.
  • Send the parent source reference with the detail.

Questions about this restoration task

Is an exported selection the untouched original?

No. It is a separate crop and may include adjustments. Preserve the full source and describe the crop's relationship to it.
