How to Digitize a Photo Without Removing It from a Scrapbook

By ImgHeal · Updated

Copy an attached photograph in context while protecting the album page and preserving captions.

Plan the capture

Do not peel a photograph from an album page to make a cleaner scan. Support the open book so the binding is not forced flat. Record the full page first, including captions, decorations, and nearby photographs.

Make a complete digital master

Use a camera above the page with even light and the lens parallel to the surface. Add closer captures of the photograph and handwriting while leaving enough border to reconnect each detail to the page.

Prepare the working copy

Create a portrait crop from a duplicate and link it to the page number. If restoration removes stains or page texture, keep the full-page master so the album context remains available.

Check before you finish

  • Leave attached photos in place.
  • Capture the complete page first.
  • Link crops to a page identifier.
