How to Restore an Old Fireworks Photograph
By ImgHeal · Updated
Keep light trails, dark sky, and overlapping bursts consistent when improving a faded fireworks snapshot.
Separate trails from scratches
Trace bright lines toward the center of a burst or along a continuous movement path. Scratches may cross the whole print without following the fireworks' direction. Some trails end abruptly because the exposure stopped, so an unfinished line is not automatically damage. Keep a full-frame source view while inspecting suspicious marks at higher magnification.
Preserve differences between bursts
Several fireworks may overlap in one exposure. Their centers, thicknesses, and brightness can differ naturally. Do not normalize them into a single symmetrical pattern. A reference from the same event may explain the setting, but it cannot establish the exact trajectory of a trail in this frame or replace information that the camera did not record.
Check the restored dark sky
Inspect for artificial stars, repeated spark shapes, and bright halos around trails. Strong noise removal can erase faint trails, while enhancement may invent new ones. If using a separate editor, compare a modest adjustment with the source before applying it across the sky. Preserve low-contrast traces that belong to the original even when they remain imperfect.
Keep exposure character in the result
A long exposure can record continuous arcs; a shorter one can show isolated bright points. The restoration should retain that visual character. View the result at the size you will share and check whether overlapping bursts still read naturally. Keep the untouched scan when documenting an event, and avoid claiming generated sparks reveal additional fireworks.
Check this scene before saving
- Follow trails to their burst or motion path.
- Watch for invented stars and repeated sparks.
- Retain the source exposure's visual character.
