How to Restore an Old Family Board Game Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
Keep game pieces, board boundaries, and overlapping hands consistent without inventing a readable game state.
Map the board and visible pieces
Identify the outer board shape and any clearly distinguishable pieces before restoration. Count only what can be seen; hands, glare, and shallow focus may hide much of the game. Keep a complete source image so the table perspective explains the layout. A tidier pattern of pieces is not necessarily a more accurate record of the evening.
Preserve perspective and occlusion
Squares or printed spaces shrink toward the far side of the board. Do not make them uniform on screen. A hand may cover a piece or leave only its top visible. Missing portions beneath hands cannot be established from the remaining grid, even if you know the game well or recognize a plausible move.
Check repeated symbols carefully
Look for pieces merged into neighboring squares, extra counters, and letters that change between source and result. Local repairs in a separate editor should follow visible board edges without completing hidden game information. Avoid using a clean board image as a replacement unless the goal is an explicitly labeled creative reconstruction rather than restoration of this photograph.
Caption the gathering honestly
Describe the family gathering and known game, but do not infer a winner or specific move from generated details. Review the restored scene at normal size and check that hands still sit naturally around the board. Keep the untouched scan alongside the viewing copy so relatives can distinguish remembered stories from information actually visible in the photograph.
Check this scene before saving
- Count only clearly visible game pieces.
- Preserve board perspective and hand overlap.
- Avoid reconstructing an unsupported game state.
