How to Handle a Camera Date Stamp in an Old Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
Decide whether removing a visible timestamp helps the presentation or discards useful context.
Record the stamp first
Save the complete source and transcribe the visible date exactly. Camera clocks can be wrong, so distinguish a displayed stamp from a confirmed event date. Check whether the numbers cover meaningful scene detail before planning removal.
Make a presentation derivative
Use a separate layer or copy for the repair. Reconstruct simple background texture conservatively and inspect objects near the stamp. If it covers a face or important lettering, missing source detail cannot be verified just because the repair looks plausible.
Preserve both interpretations
Keep a stamp-visible record and a clearly named display version. Add the original stamp to the archive notes rather than permanently losing it in a crop. When sharing historical material, explain any reconstructed area that affects the scene.
Check before you finish
- Record the visible stamp and its uncertainty.
- Keep a stamp-visible source copy.
