How to Fit an Old Photo into a 5 × 7 Print

By ImgHeal · Updated

Plan for a 7:5 crop instead of assuming a common 3:2 image will fit unchanged.

Check the shape difference

A 5 × 7 print uses a different ratio from a 4 × 6 print. Open a duplicate and preview a 7:5 landscape or 5:7 portrait crop. Keep the original dimensions noted so later exports can return to the complete composition.

Protect important edges

Look for people and objects close to the proposed boundary. Reposition the crop rather than stretching the scene. If the composition cannot tolerate trimming, consider borders or a different print size accepted by the lab.

Confirm the delivered layout

Inspect the print provider's preview for additional cropping and leave appropriate space near the edges. At an example 300 PPI, 2100 by 1500 pixels maps to 7 by 5 inches. Proof important enlargements rather than judging only by that calculation.

Check before you finish

  • Preview the 7:5 shape deliberately.
  • Consider borders when cropping would remove context.
