How to Prepare an 8 × 10 Photo Without Cutting Off Heads
By ImgHeal · Updated
Account for the 5:4 shape and the crop applied by the printing service.
Start from the complete master
An 8 × 10 print has a 5:4 landscape ratio, which can require a substantial crop from a 3:2 source. Preview that shape on a duplicate. Keep enough space around hair, hats, and hands before committing to a tight portrait.
Choose crop or padding
If a group does not fit safely, use intentional borders or another size rather than squeezing the image. Check whether the lab offers fit-to-image printing. A digital crop should preserve people and meaningful context before prioritizing full-paper coverage.
Proof the actual order
At an example 300 PPI, 3000 by 2400 pixels corresponds to 10 by 8 inches. Follow provider requirements and inspect a sample at normal viewing distance. AI-generated detail may look polished on screen yet remain unfamiliar in a large portrait.
Check before you finish
- Preview a 5:4 crop from the full master.
- Check headroom in the final lab preview.
