Check PSD Compatibility Before Sharing an Editable Photo Project
By ImgHeal · Updated
A layered PSD can contain editing features another application handles differently. Photoshop's compatibility choices can help some workflows, but a visible composite preview is not proof that every layer remains editable. Test both the appearance and the specific edits the recipient needs.

List the required editable features
Identify the layers, masks, text, Smart Objects, and adjustments that matter to the handoff. A relative needing only a viewing copy does not need the same package as an editor continuing detailed repairs. Record which application and version will open the project. Preserve the native working file and source scan independently so testing another program cannot become the only surviving representation of the restoration.
Read save compatibility choices
Adobe documents PSD/PSB format compatibility preferences. Inspect the relevant save setting and understand that compatibility can involve a composite representation alongside the working structure. Do not promise universal support for third-party applications. Save a clearly named trial and ask the recipient to open that exact file. Avoid flattening the only project merely to make a warning disappear; create a separate rendered delivery when that is the actual need.
Test function as well as appearance
Compare the opened composite with a reference export, then ask the recipient to toggle a repair layer, inspect a mask, and edit a harmless test caption as appropriate. Record features that changed or became unavailable. Supply the original application project plus a conventional viewing file when needed, with clear labels for their roles. A successful thumbnail preview proves little about editability, and a compatible file does not authenticate the changes made inside it. Keep source attribution and generated-edit notes with the package.

Questions about this restoration task
Does a correct PSD preview prove every layer is supported?
No. Test the actual editing features the recipient needs and provide a separate viewing copy when useful.
