Choose Open or Place Embedded for a Photo in Photoshop
By ImgHeal · Updated
Open and Place Embedded serve different purposes in Photoshop. Opening a scan creates a document for that image; placing it inserts content into the current project. Choose from the task, then inspect the resulting layer and geometry so a layout convenience does not silently change the source relationship.

Decide which document should own the work
For direct scan inspection, you may want the image in its own document. For a memorial page or before-and-after layout, you may want it inside a larger design. Keep the full source outside the layout either way. Record the intended parent project and source filename. A scan placed on a page is a representation within that page, not evidence that the original file now has the page's dimensions or resolution.
Inspect the insertion result
Adobe documents placing files as embedded content and the resulting Smart Object workflow. Check the active document before invoking Place Embedded, then inspect the selected layer and the transformation preview. Confirm whether the entire image and border fit as intended. If the file opens separately instead, recognize that you used a different route rather than dragging pixels between tabs until something appears. Keep any automatic sizing or placement assumptions visible in the test notes.
Verify the saved relationship
Save a duplicate project and reopen it to check that the embedded image appears without relying on an unrelated open tab. Inspect subject proportions and the full layout at output size. Preserve a separate untouched scan because embedding does not create an independent archival backup or guarantee portability of every other project resource. Export a viewing proof for recipients who do not need the editable layout, and label that proof as the design output rather than a replacement source master.
Check this workflow before using the result
- Choose standalone editing or layout placement.
- Check the active parent document.
- Inspect embedded layer geometry after saving.

Questions about this restoration task
Does placing a scan change its original file into the page layout?
Placement creates a relationship inside the working project. Keep the original file separately and inspect which content was embedded or linked.
