How to Digitize a Photo with Brown Foxing Spots

By ImgHeal · Updated

Record brown age spots clearly, then make a restrained digital copy without erasing real image detail.

Protect the original first

Brown or reddish spots can have several causes, and a screen view cannot diagnose the original. Do not apply household cleaners. Capture the whole print in even light and include borders so the location and extent of the spots remain visible.

Record the visible damage

Make a duplicate scan for editing. Separate isolated spots in plain background areas from marks that cross faces, handwriting, or detailed textures. Work conservatively where the spot covers information the source no longer shows.

Review the digital result

Inspect the repaired copy beside the source at equal size. Watch for plastic-looking skin, cloned patterns, or missing freckles and fabric details. Keep the original scan as the condition record.

Check before you finish

  • Capture the full print and borders.
  • Avoid physical cleaning experiments.
  • Check that real features were not removed.
