Why Does a Photo Upload Show a Black Image?

By ImgHeal · Updated

Check transparency, unsupported formats, damaged files, and preview errors before converting the source.

Identify where the problem begins

Open the file locally and in a second viewer. Check its real format, color mode, transparency, and whether the black area appears only in the website preview.

Create a safe diagnostic copy

Make a duplicate and flatten transparency against a chosen background when appropriate, or export a standard sRGB JPEG or PNG. Do not rename the extension and assume the data changed.

Verify the corrected file

Reopen and upload the converted copy. Confirm that dark photograph areas still contain detail and that a transparent background was not accidentally turned black.

Check before you finish

  • Test the file in another viewer.
  • Convert a duplicate properly.
  • Check dark detail and transparency.
