Why Renaming a Photo Extension Does Not Convert It
By ImgHeal · Updated
Change the encoded format with an export tool rather than editing the filename suffix.
Distinguish label and contents
The extension helps software choose how to open a file, but changing .png to .jpg does not rewrite the image data. A site may inspect the actual format and reject the renamed file even when its name looks acceptable.
Export a real conversion
Open the source in a tool that supports its format and choose an accepted output format. Save a new copy with the matching extension. Keep the source untouched and check whether transparency or animation will be lost in the chosen output.
Test the new file
Reopen the export and inspect its appearance before uploading. If conversion fails, check whether the original opens correctly first. A damaged or unsupported source cannot be repaired simply by trying a succession of different filename suffixes.
Check before you finish
- Use an actual format export.
- Keep filename suffix and encoded format consistent.
